De La Terre Release Party

Saturday, September 11, 5:00PM to 8:00PM

We invite you to come celebrate Dacalier’s inaugural release of De La Terre.    The 2008 De La Terre is a sublime blend of Grenache, Carignan & Syrah.   We have a love for the Southern Rhone region of France and we have worked hard to produce a wine that is reminiscent of this region using California fruit.

James the Wine Guy reports on PinkOut

James Melendez, otherwise known by many wine geeks as James the Wine Guy made it out to the 2010 PinkOut and posted a blog about his scores on the wines.  I was hoping to meet James while he was there, but unfortunately, I missed him.   My bad, because he scored our 09 Dacalier Premiere Rose pretty well.  (The only 9.1 out of 10)

Here is an excerpt of his blog, along with a link to the complete blog.    See below.

“Rosés are wines that are either forgotten or passed on at a tastingwhere there are white and reds–the in betweenness is either a challengepoint or something that is ignored.   If you like sparkling Rosé why nottry a still one?  The colors of the wines here were beautiful–palelight red, liquid strawberry, jewel toned, etc.  The flavors and scentswere also bountiful and differentiated.  More to come in my individualreviews.

Dacalier Premiere Lake County Rosé – 9.1

Amorosa Bella Mendocino County Sparkling Rosé NV – 9.0

2009 Rosé Released

What a week last week was.  We just released the 2009 Rosé and started it with a bang.

Tuesday, Dave and I poured at the “Pink Out” at Butterfly restaurant in San Francisco, where there were 39 other wineries showcasing their Rose’s.  Let me give a big kudos and thank you to Butterfly, the event was extremely well run, great food (loved the Kobe burger sliders and salmon sushi), and very friendly staff.  Dave and I had a great time.  The wine was a hit; it’s always good when you see folks bring their friends by to try your wine and get seconds themselves!

There was no time to rest though; we threw the release party/BBQ at the winery on Saturday, so it was off to move barrels around and make room for the BBQ.  For those of you who missed it, I fired up the Big Green Egg (a great BBQ/smoker), and got the smoking wood ready (a mix of used barrel staves and hickory).   The pork shoulder hit the grill and slowly smoked away for 12 hours.  Low and slow!

The menu included pulled pork, Hawaiian sausage, as well as various cheeses.  We pulled a barrel down for samples of our 2008 De La Terre, red Rhone blend, which paired very well with the food, as did the Rosé.

We have been received very well by the Pink Out crowd as well as our fans.  We are very proud of what we have produced!

Enjoy!

Bottling Day Doesn't Always go as Planned

The 09 DPR labelWelcome friends to another winery blog from Dacalier Wine Co.   Last saturday was our long awaited bottling day for our 2009 Dacalier Premiere Rose and Eric & me are big fans of prepping as much as possible especially when it comes to bottling day.    We wanted to make sure the rose was filtered and ready to roll on Saturday, so on Friday, we were at the winery until 9:30pm getting the course filtration and the sterile filtration completed, a quick cleaning of the tanks and we were ready for Saturday.

We managed to order up some beautiful weather and a few of our friends took time out of their busy schedule to give us a little help.   I want to thank Jeff, Milos and Deux Punks(Aaron & Dan)  for helping us out.  We couldnt have done it without all of you, so thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
 The empty bottling trailer
Well the bottling truck arrived bright and early and everything looked like it was going to go without a hitch, we had some donuts, steam cleaned the bottle filler and had the hoses all connected.   All we had to do was align the labeler to the bottles and turn on the pumps.

Well after an hour, and about 75 labels later, it was determined that the sensor is mucked up and we Full trailerhad to move forward without the labels on the bottles.  We managed to save most of the labels which were used to label the cases.

Now that we finally got a chance to get started,  we put someone at eachJeff sparging in the background station and got the bottling line humming along. Lisa kept the empty bottles flowing while Jeff (with cap) was doing the sparging and Milos (shades) ran the corker like he had done it before.   Actually Milos has a few years experience from the Paso Robles Transition from Filler to corkerarea, so he was a great asset to have this weekend   Milos corks the filled bottles
Dan was filling the cases while Aaron and I were labeling the boxes and placing them on the pallet.

Deux Punkx Dan fills the casesWe almost had a full pallet when all of  sudden  a bang comes from the filler and the rose starts pouring out of the filler bowl.    “SHUT OFF THE PUMP”  Luckily, Paul was closest to the pump kept us from losing too much wine.   We all took a break while Rob determined that the sensor on the filler blew and  because Rob and Paul knew how to fix these kinds of things, we were back online in about 20 minutes.
Labels for boxed cases
Within the the next hour, we sparged, filled bottles, corked and filled, stacked and labeled the cases.   We did manage to get our 90 cases bottled, which was great because we thought maybe we would come up short after the spill.    I am sorry I didnt get as many pictures as I would have liked, but I was busy on the line with the rest of the team.    We have the wine in thebottle resting safely in the winery and RobEric saving some Rose will return to label thebottles when he gets the labeler sensor repaired and we are on schedulefor a release date of April 28th.    Just in time for Rose season.

We finished up our weekend by writing tasting notes and I think the best way to describe the 2009 Dacalier Premiere Rose is floral with hints strawberry and tropical notes, well balanced with a silky elegant medium finish.  We can’t wait for this release and look forward to pouring it for you this Milos with an overfillspring.

Be on the look out for another spring BBQ at the Punk Dog Winery in the next 6-8 weeks.  They are always a blast.

If you get a chance to get tickets for Pink Out 2010 in San Francisco, held by the Rose Avenger and Producers, we will be pouring along with 40 other Rose producers.  It is sure to be a blast.
You can get tickets here: PINK OUT 2010 Tuesday May 11th @ Butterfly in SF

Cheers,
Dave

2008 Dacalier Premierè Rosé rated Exceptional

Dacalier “Premiere Rose” Lake County 2008 (USA)

Pink salmon color. The nose is fresh and wonderfully complex with notes of strawberry, rhubarb, tea berries, dried apricot, and star fruit with accents of spring flowers. The palate is a unique animal indeed. Ripe and tart berries mingle with a distinct flavor of Lapsang Souchong tea and hints of mineral. Ideally balanced and perfect with smoked salmon or charcuterie. Bravo!
You can check out the details by following this link.

Cheers,

dave
